A lovely, edible Crab Apple producing crisp, sharply flavoured, deep-red fruits which remain on the tree well into winter. Crab Apple ‘Diable Rouge’ is a particularly attractive cultivar in Spring. Pink blooms nestle amongst the new foliage which emerges a deep purple shade, before deepening to green in summer. The foliage is equally appealing as autumn takes hold and the leaves turn to rich, buttery yellow. This compact, deciduous tree has a rounded, spreading habit that makes a pleasing focal point in cottage gardens and orchards. Height: 2.5m (8’). Spread: 3m (10’).
Culinary note: Some parts of these flowers are edible. For more details about edible flowers click here.
Generally crab apples are too tart to eat raw, but their apple flavour becomes intense when cooked. Cab apples have high pectin content great for jam and jellies, and are a perfect ingredient for chutneys.
Plant height and spread is seasonal therefore we list by pot size rather than a defined plant size. The height and spread of the plant delivered will vary depending on the season, meaning arrival images are an indication only.
