Hakonechloa macra SunFlare (‘Habsfl007’)
Height x Spread:Â 45cm x 45cm
A recently introduced cultivar ‘SunFlare’ stands out for its eye-catching colour combination. Like other forms of Japanese forest grass it forms lush mounds of arching foliage but each leaf is a sharp yellow-green tipped with red. In autumn the tips take on fiery tones of orange and red adding a real punch of colour to the garden before fading to buff but remaining upright over the winter.
The intensity and contrast in colour builds with time and is also enhanced in sunnier locations but this grass does best in part shade in a cool, moist but free draining humus enriched soil. It is perfect for lighting up slightly shady areas of a woodland garden, adding a bold statement at the front of a border or as the foil for other plants in a container. For a long lasting display with colour and texture combine it with Hydrangea, Helleborus, Pachysandra and Geranium psilostemon.Â
