Lilac ‘Esther Staley’ is an early flowering variety with flowers resembling those of a hyacinth. Purple-red buds open to a mass of lilac-pink, highly scented blooms in late spring. The heart shaped foliage emerges bronze, quickly maturing to mid-green throughout the summer. This hardy, deciduous shrub makes a welcome addition to the garden, planted near a doorway or path where its rich scent can be appreciated every time you pass by. Bees and butterflies find Syringa irresistible making it a great choice for a sunny wildlife garden. Height: to 4m (13′). Spread: 2.5m (8′).
Culinary note: Adding the fragrant flowers to cream cheese or even yoghurt for a hint of lemon flavour. For more details about edible flowers click here.
