A superb variety for the smaller garden, Magnolia ‘Rose Marie’ is prized for its early maturity to flower and a later and longer blooming season. It forms a small tree or large shrub with a pyramidal habit. Furry buds emerge late, making them much less vulnerable to frost than other varieties. From late spring, its bare branches carry voluminous, bowl-shaped blooms with broad petals. The large flowers are up to 20-30cm across with a bright rose-pink exterior and a lighter interior. The flowers have a delightful lemony fragrance and are a magnet for beneficial pollinators. Blooming continues for up to an incredible 6 weeks! The flowers are followed by deep green foliage.
Magnolia ‘Rose Marie’ is a good choice for northern climates, avoiding the worst of the spring frosts. It makes a fabulous ornamental specimen for a spring border underplanted with bulbs and will be equally happy grown in a sheltered container in ericaceous compost. Height: 4m (13ft). Spread: 3m (10ft).
